It's no small feat to draw attention from both Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper in a photograph, but Amy Adams does just that as she oozes retro sexiness in a new production still from this holiday season's must-see crime drama, "American Hustle."
In the photo from Entertainment Weekly, Adams looks like a Bond villainess (or perhaps even an understudy for Catwoman on the old Adam West "Batman" television series) as she struts down the street in an extremely low-cut leather outfit, doing a lot more for '70s fashion than her suit-wearing co-stars. Oddly enough, it makes for something of a throwback companion piece to the stunning black dress she wore to the "Man of Steel" premiere earlier this summer.
This is quite a new look for the usually rather conservative Adams. Really, compare her "American Hustle" outfit to the one she wore in, say, "Doubt" (in which she played a nun) and you'll see how extreme the contrast really is.

It seems that "American Hustle" director David O. Russell is the go-to guy in getting Adams to break out of her usually demure and introspective persona, as she played the hottest bartender in Lowell, MA in their previous collaboration, 2010's "The Fighter" (she earned an Oscar nomination for her efforts as well).
True, Adams has shown some skin before, though most of her more, uh, revealing roles can be found earlier in her career, such as in "Serving Sara" (2002) and especially (and rather notoriously) "Psycho Beach Party" (2000) — besides the rather innocent(-ish) princess costume in "Enchanted" (2007) and her brief covered-by-a-towel moment in "Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day" (2008), Adams hasn't really been known for wearing sexy get-ups in her later-career filmography.
The new pic from "American Hustle" makes for an appropriate companion piece to the teaser trailer that was released last week, in which Adams manages to out-sexy even Jennifer Lawrence (who is, for the record, 16 years Adams' junior) as she slinks around in a variety of hot outfits, working herfemme fatale con artist character full-throttle. And while seeing her in photos is certainly eye-opening, seeing her in motion is another matter entirely.
Really, seeing Adams get it on throughout the trailer made quite the impression, especially when you consider her recent roles as no-nonsense journalist Lois Lane in "Man of Steel" and as the buttoned-up Peggy Dodd in "The Master," a part that also required her to play somewhat older. This fall she'll also play a more dowdy character (with frizzy curls that Bradley Cooper would be envious of) opposite Joaquin Phoenix in Spike Jonze's "Her."
It'll be much fun to watch Amy Adams cause trouble and raise temperatures in "American Hustle," which opens in limited release on December 13 before going wide on December 25. Hopefully her co-stars will be able to keep up.
